Here's my recipe for 'cavity wax' to prevent corrosion: 40% linseed oil, 40% hot molten candle wax, 20% kerosene. Spray hot using a schutz gun. The wax sets pretty quick and then over a few weeks the linseed oil reacts with air & sets as well. Linseed has good anti-corrosion properies on steel (see ancient gun maintenance) and the wax provides the instant-set and dewetting acion to keep the water out. Dave has dropped by to my town before and was fascinated by the shop's skills Hey david, for the cavity wax, when do I apply it? my painters is stripping the roof and the bonnet and rear of the car, as the paint was bubbly. Then the painter will use some machine and grind off the rusted bits and start coating it with a primer. I might explain it wrongly as I am just recalling and retranslating what he said to me in cantonese. Let me know on how to do it, thanks! | ||

For instance, that hatch panel in your photos is 'hollow' or double-skinned... by drilling a hole in the frame & squirting wax inside you'll stop it rusting from the inside-out. All modern cars are heavily filled with cavity wax... in fact some VWs are so heavily-filled it drips out of various places staining the bodywork!! There used to be a company called Ziebart who would cavity-wax new cars.. I still see reports on the internet of 30yr old 'Ziebarted' cars that have no major corrosion... quite amazing. Sounds like the same principal dentists does for their patient's teeth, except this ones on a car. Japanese metal is susceptible to heavy corrosion. Even Jay Leno had to re-restore a restored Honda S600. But this is definitely the thrill of restoring a car. You get to be a project manager for your own project and you will like the outcome in the end of the day | ||
